If you have spent any time looking at wine country gardens, estate driveways, or well-designed Sonoma County landscapes, you have almost certainly walked on one of these two surfaces without knowing exactly what it was. Decomposed granite and Granitecrete look nearly identical from a distance. Up close — and under your feet — they behave very differently.

This is a decision that affects how your property looks, how it drains, how much upkeep it demands, and what it costs every square foot. Getting it wrong means either a surface that turns to dust in summer or a patio that cracks within a few years. Getting it right means a landscape that looks like it belongs here — because it does.

What Is Decomposed Granite?

Decomposed granite — universally called DG in the trade — is exactly what the name suggests: granite rock that has weathered and broken down over time into small angular particles, typically 3/8 inch and finer. The same geological process that gave Sonoma County its iron-rich soils and the distinctive gold and rust tones you see throughout the Alexander Valley is what produces DG.

DG comes in three main forms:

  • Loose DG — The most natural-looking option. Spread and compacted, it settles into a firm-but-yielding surface. It migrates over time, can track onto adjacent hardscape, and needs periodic raking and replenishment. This is what you see on most informal paths, under oak trees, and in naturalistic garden areas.
  • Stabilized DG — Loose DG mixed with a liquid or dry organic stabilizer (typically a plant-based polymer) before compaction. The result is a firmer surface that resists migration and reduces dust significantly. Still permeable. Still looks natural. Most professional installations use this form.
  • DG with resin binder — A harder, more rigid surface. Occasionally used for commercial paths and ADA-accessible routes. Less common in residential landscapes because it sacrifices the natural give that makes DG appealing.

In Sonoma County, local DG is quarried from the same granite formations that run through the Mayacamas and Sonoma Mountains. The gold and warm tan tones complement the region’s architecture naturally — this is not a material you have to force to fit.

What Is Granitecrete?

Granitecrete is a brand name, not a generic product category — a distinction worth knowing before you start getting competitive bids. It is a proprietary stabilized DG product manufactured by Granitecrete Inc., based in California, and it uses a specific plant-derived polymer binder that is mixed into the DG before installation.

The result is a surface that looks and feels much like compacted stabilized DG but is significantly harder and more durable. Properly installed Granitecrete does not migrate, produces minimal dust, holds up under vehicle traffic, and resists erosion even on moderate slopes. It remains permeable to rainwater — an important distinction from concrete, which is impermeable and creates runoff.

Because Granitecrete is a proprietary product with licensed installers, not every landscape contractor carries it. You will pay more, and you will be working with a contractor who has been trained in the installation process. The tradeoff is a surface that is more predictable and durable than generic stabilized DG.

A Note on Terminology

Contractors and homeowners in Sonoma County often use “Granitecrete” to mean any stabilized DG product, the same way people say “Xerox” to mean any photocopy. If a bid says Granitecrete, confirm whether it means the actual Granitecrete Inc. product or a generic stabilized DG alternative — the price, performance, and warranty will differ.

Installation: What the Process Actually Looks Like

  • Excavation: 4 to 6 inches of existing soil removed, deeper in soft or clay-heavy areas
  • Weed barrier: Commercial-grade fabric laid over the excavated area (not the thin rolls from hardware stores)
  • Base material: 3 to 4 inches of compacted Class 2 road base — this is the structural layer that prevents settling

Which One Is Right for Your Property?

If your project is primarily a driveway or a formal entry sequence and budget is not the binding constraint, Granitecrete will pay for itself in reduced maintenance and longer surface life. If your project is a large garden area, a naturalistic path through planted beds, or an orchard floor, stabilized DG is the right choice at roughly half the cost.

What does not work: loose DG on a slope without adequate edging, any DG product installed directly on native soil without a proper base, or Granitecrete installed by a contractor who has not worked with the product before. The last one is more common than it should be — always ask specifically whether a contractor has installed Granitecrete or is proposing a generic stabilized product instead.
