Lawn removal is one of the most common requests we receive — and one of the most rewarding transformations we do. Neighborhood-Specific Design Challenges
Fountaingrove and the Eastern Hills: The hillside neighborhoods of Fountaingrove, rebuilt extensively after the 2017 Tubbs Fire, present some of Sonoma County's most demanding design conditions. Slopes, volcanic soils, fire-safe landscaping requirements, and wind exposure all factor into every design decision. Cal Fire's defensible space regulations require careful plant selection and placement within 100 feet of structures, and the City of Santa Rosa has its own additional vegetation management requirements for the Wildland-Urban Interface zone. We design landscapes that meet these codes while creating beautiful, livable outdoor spaces — using fire-resistant species like Heteromeles arbutifolia (Toyon), Ceanothus, and low-growing groundcovers that reduce fuel loads without sacrificing aesthetics.
Rincon Valley: Moving southeast, Rincon Valley's gentler terrain and deeper soils allow for a broader plant palette. The area's somewhat warmer microclimate — sheltered from the coastal influence that moderates western Santa Rosa — supports heat-loving species and extends the outdoor living season. Many Rincon Valley properties feature mature native oaks that anchor the landscape and require careful stewardship to maintain their health while developing the surrounding garden.
Bennett Valley: Tucked between Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Peak, this valley is cooler and more influenced by fog than much of Santa Rosa. The soil shifts from clay to clay-loam, and the higher moisture levels support a lusher planting palette. Bennett Valley landscapes often have a greener, more textured feel than their counterparts elsewhere in the city.
The Santa Rosa Plain: The western and southern flatlands of Santa Rosa sit on some of the heaviest clay soil in the county. This soil — the so-called Cotati and Clear Lake clay series — expands dramatically when wet and cracks deeply when dry. It creates persistent drainage challenges and limits plant selection to species that tolerate both seasonal waterlogging and summer drought. Proper grading, subsurface drainage, and soil amendment are prerequisites for any successful landscape project on the Plain.
Working with Santa Rosa's Clay Soil
Clay soil is the defining characteristic of much of Santa Rosa's landscape. The UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County identifies clay soil management as one of the most common challenges facing home gardeners in the region. The practical implications for landscape design are significant:
- Drainage infrastructure comes first. We install French drains, catch basins, and subsurface drainage systems before any planting begins. Skipping this step on clay soil is a recipe for root rot, standing water, and foundation damage.
- Raised planting areas improve root-zone drainage for species that cannot tolerate wet feet. Even a six-inch raise in planting grade can make the difference between a thriving plant and a dead one.
- Soil amendment at planting — incorporating compost and fine bark into the backfill — improves structure in the immediate root zone. However, amending the entire site is rarely practical or necessary.
- Irrigation must be calibrated for clay. Low-volume drip applied slowly over longer run times allows water to percolate rather than run off. Standard spray heads on clay slopes are a common cause of wasted water and erosion.
Post-Fire Landscape Rebuilding
The 2017 Tubbs Fire and the 2019 Kincade Fire reshaped Santa Rosa's relationship with its landscape. Thousands of properties were rebuilt, and the landscaping requirements for those new builds reflect lessons learned. Fire-resistant design is no longer optional in many parts of the city — it is code-mandated and, beyond that, simply prudent.
