Before you begin
Start with the particular site, not a citywide formula.
A level Santa Rosa lot and a hillside property can ask for very different construction decisions. Record grade changes, the direction of runoff, retaining features, and access for equipment before committing to a patio layout. The design should identify where specialist assessment is needed rather than hide those questions behind a planting plan.
In an established neighborhood, privacy, mature trees, and the relationship to adjoining gardens often deserve early attention. In a more open setting, shade and views may lead the plan. Prioritize the changes that improve daily use, and discuss how the first construction phase can support later work without requiring avoidable demolition.
